Our Story

Started with an overgrown garden, a global pandemic and a toad.

During the pandemic we moved to a lovely cottage in Galgate. Once we had unpacked our boxes, we turned our attention to the rambling, overgrown garden.

Like many people at this time, we rediscovered a connection with the natural world on our doorstep. Along with daily walks and volunteering, our garden kept us sane during the long months of furlough.

One day, heading into autumn, we uncovered a toad, hiding under a discarded railway sleeper and it dawned on us that the garden didn’t just belong to us. We would view ourselves as custodians of this greenspace, that had been home to a thriving eco-system long before we turned up.

As we toiled daily, creating a garden that was beautiful and usable by both us and its inhabitants, we dreamily imagined gardening for a living.

Fate then intervened and a tree fell into our garden. The gardener employed to remove it, impressed with our vision and abilities, told us that there was a shortage of skilled gardeners. The very next week Jane happened across ‘The Growing Club’, a business course for women.

With the support of this organisation, other gardeners, friends and family, Hedgepigs Gardening was launched in January 2022.
